Melissa Frecker, the 2009 Collegiate Concerto Winner

Melissa is from Marion, IN. She began playing the harp at eight years old under the instruction of Ms. Elizabeth Richter, professor of harp at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. From the beginning Melissa participated in the BSU harp ensemble and recitals, but she had the opportunity to perform locally as well. Along with her two brothers and three sisters, who all play musical instruments, she performed for various retirement and nursing homes in the area, and also became involved with music at church. In high school she entered and won several competitions with her harp, including the MPO Concerto/ Aria competition, and the Muncie Youth Concerto Competition. Along with two of her siblings she also participated in the 2007 Indiana State Fair Talent competition as a double harp/ piano trio. Together they won both first place in their division as well as the overall first place. During this time she also had the opportunity to play harp with the IWU orchestra several times. Melissa is currently a junior at Indiana Wesleyan University, majoring in nursing. She is still involved with both the IWU orchestra and wind ensemble, and has toured with them throughout Indiana. She would especially like to thank her parents, Mel & Nicki Frecker, for their love and support, and encouraging her in her musical abilities.
